Direct to film, explained simply

DTF printing for custom apparel

DTF stands for direct-to-film. Your artwork is printed onto a special film and then heat-applied to the garment. The result is a full-color design on a finished shirt or other suitable apparel.

At SpectraColor, you order the completed product. We review the artwork, confirm the garment and print placement, and apply the design for you.

DTF can work well for colorful logos, detailed graphics, and small or mixed-size apparel orders. It works with many cotton, polyester, and blended garments; we check suitability for the specific fabric and design.

Choose the right printing method

Heat transfer describes how a design is applied; DTF is one type of heat transfer. We can help choose the approach that fits your artwork, garment, quantity, and budget.

Method A good fit for What to consider
DTF printing Full-color logos, detailed artwork, and flexible order quantities. The print sits on the fabric surface. Large solid designs may feel heavier than smaller, open designs.
Vinyl heat transfer Simple lettering, names, numbers, and suitable specialty finishes. Design complexity, color layers, and fabric affect the best choice.
Screen printing Repeated designs for larger orders, especially with fewer print colors. Quantity, ink colors, and setup affect the price. There is no single quantity cutoff for every project.

DTF printing questions

Do you sell DTF transfers or gang sheets by themselves?

No. SpectraColor sells finished custom apparel. We apply the designs to the garments; we do not sell standalone DTF transfers or DIY transfer sheets.

Can you print full-color artwork on dark shirts?

Yes. DTF can reproduce full-color designs on suitable light and dark garments. We review your artwork and garment choice before confirming the order.

Is DTF the same as heat transfer vinyl?

No. DTF uses a printed film transfer; heat transfer vinyl typically uses cut vinyl shapes or lettering. Both are applied with heat, but they suit different designs.

What file should I send?

A high-resolution PNG with a transparent background is useful for full-color artwork. Vector files such as SVG, EPS, or a vector PDF are helpful for logos. Send the best file you have and tell us the desired print size.

How does the print feel?

DTF forms a layer on the fabric rather than soaking into it. Feel varies with the artwork and coverage. Smaller designs and open areas generally feel lighter than large solid prints.

How should I wash printed apparel?

Follow the garment’s care label and the instructions supplied with your order. Washing inside out in cold water helps protect the design. Avoid ironing directly on the print.

Can I order a small quantity, and how soon will it be ready?

Tell us how many pieces you need and your deadline. We’ll confirm the available garment options, order requirements, pricing, and current turnaround before you place the order.
